Amazing

Gown Alterations

Congratulations! You have just found your dream wedding dress. However, almost every bride
will need to have some small alterations made to their dress, so that it meets all her
specifications, fits perfectly, and most importantly, makes her feel like her most beautiful self.

Here is everything you need to know to help you better understand the alteration process to
achieve the perfect fit!

What types of alterations can be made?

Basic Alterations: Basic alterations such as hemming the length, adjusting the sides of the gown, and fine-tuning the fit of the dress are essential for the gown to look its best. Major Alterations: Extensive changes can be made with enough time, such as adding details like off-the-shoulder straps, sleeves, train length, lace appliqués, beading, buttons, and a bustle (to keep the train from dragging behind the bride while dancing). As bridal experts, we are happy to take on complex designs such as those that are fully beaded. The rule of thumb of alterations. Garments should be slightly too big for you, rather than too small. This is required to achieve a precise fit. Never order a smaller dress as weight loss motivation. Altering a dress that is too small for you is far more complicated and occasionally unperformable. Instead, consider a gown with structure that may have a built-in corset, which can be easily tightened or loosened. Please do not wear fake tan or makeup to your fittings!

How far in advance do I need to book?

Always allow plenty of time for your wedding dress alterations, so that it does not become a source of stress or worry in the run up to the wedding. Your initial alteration appointment should be booked eight weeks before your wedding date, or eight weeks before your flight to your wedding destination. If you are still working towards your weight goals, five weeks before your wedding date should be the latest booking for your initial alteration appointment. To secure a booking, contact us at least a month in advance of the date you need your first alteration appointment. Last-minute alterations available! Sometimes life happens in unpredictable ways. So, if you are in a hurry - Don’t worry! We offer rush fittings and can turn around garments in a week, but we need you to be extremely flexible with availability for fittings.

How much can I change my dress?

Depending on the dress, major alterations like adding sleeves and changing necklines can be made. Ideally ask the boutique to request more fabric from the designer when ordering your dress. Otherwise, the right fabric will be sourced for you. Also, depending on the dress some alterations can be made to make the dress more comfortable to wear, such as letting out the dress a little for more movement or removing underskirts and nets.

How many and how long will a fitting take?

Two fittings are enough to get most wedding dresses that require basic alterations fitting beautifully. Major alterations may need three fittings and in very rare cases more. Each fitting will take approximately 30 minutes to maximum an hour.

What happens at the fittings?

First fitting: You will try on your garment, and it will be pinned and tailored for an ideal fit. Below questions will be answered at this appointment. * What alterations are needed to get the dress fitting correctly? * Is it possible to alter the dress as per requests like adding a sleeve, changing the neckline, or shortening the hem? * How many appointments you will need? * How long will the alterations take? * How much will the alterations cost? * Date/time for next booking? * What should you wear and/or bring to future fittings? * What should you keep in mind when purchasing accessories? If you have yet to purchase them. Second fitting: You try your dress and if you love it, you take it home along with some tips on best way to get into the dress on the day. And show exactly how to do it! Third fitting: (If needed) Any minor tweaking from the second fitting would have been completed and you can once again try your dress on to make sure you're 100% happy and now you can take it home!

Who and what should I bring to my fittings?

Who can you bring is totally up to you. You could attend on your own or bring one to two members of your bridal party. But do not forget to bring the following: * Shoes you plan to wear with the garment or shoes of similar height/sole if you haven’t purchased them yet. * Underwear and shapewear (if any) you plan to wear with the garment. Remember that your wedding underwear should be nude, not white, to avoid showing through the fabric. Bringing a selection of bras and cups to see which one will work best with your dress is strongly recommended.

Do you have any wedding dress shopping tips?

Consider bra support when shopping for the dress. For example, backless dresses have little to no support, which may be problematic for bigger busts. * Consider the fabric of the dress. It should be stretchy for fitted, figure-hugging dresses, as stiffer, slinky, bias-cut dresses cannot obtain this same effect. * In general, the slinkier the gown, the harder it is to fix the fit if you gain or lose weight. * Be realistic about how much a dress can be resized. One size bigger is optimal, two sizes bigger is challenging. But anything over three sizes may require a full redesign, which would probably end up costing more than what the dress cost. * Long-sleeve wedding dresses will never be fitted completely to your body, to allow range of movement in your arms for giving hugs and dancing! * Shoes/bracelets with highly embellished details may catch/pull on chiffon fabric. * If the dress requires major changes to its shape, it's probably not the dress for you.
